Moose Jaw February 2011

The Brier, it was not.

Some curled with two brooms — decorated with party streamers and construction paper arrows — fluorescent socks and “big hair” wigs were the uniforms of choice, and takeout attempts did not always have the desired result, but that may have had something to do with the fact that all of the lights were off.

On Saturday night, 32 curlers took to the ice at the Hillcrest Curling Club for an 1980s-themed glow curling event. The mini-spiel was a Moose Jaw Kinettes-organized fundraiser for Telemiracle 35.

Where fluorescent tackiness was the norm, Dave LeNouail stood out by sporting that lost relic of fashion — the fanny pack.

LeNouail, whose wig may have had some mistake him for Eddie Van Halen, combed the second hand clothing stores to find the perfect outfit.

“I can’t do 70s, can’t do 60s, can’t do early 90s, this is where it’s at,” he said, adding that he is not sad at all that the fanny pack is no longer in vogue.

Before Saturday he had not curled in six years and his shins took a beating, but the event was a blast, he said.

“I love it, this is such a great idea. It’s just too bad more people didn’t show up.”

The fundraiser was the first of the year for the Kinettes in advance of Telemiracle on March 5-6.

The Kinettes will also be holding a steak night on Feb. 26 at the Eagles Club as a fundraiser.
